| Delhi
is the capital of the Republic
of India. A city with history
dating back through the centuries,
it has seen the arrival fo Muslim
raiders and the British. Today
the city has expanded many times
over from what was once established
on the west bank of the River
Yamuna, straddling the river.
The city has two distinct parts,
Old Delhi & New Delhi.
Old Delhi consists of the
area around Chandni Chowk,
Jama Masjid and Red Fort which
contains the “walled
city”. New Delhi boasts
of “Lutyens Delhi”
- designed principally by
the British with wide open
roads, green avenues, palatial
bungalows and art centres. |

| Picturesquely situated on the crescent shaped left bank of the holy Ganga, Varanasi, one of the ancient seats of learning in India, is said to be a compound of the names of two streams, the Varuna and the Assi, which still flow in the north and south of the city respectively. Varanasi is probably one of the most ancient living cities in India. From time immemorial it has been a great religious center for Hindus and one of their most sacred places of pilgrimage, being visited by millions of people every year. Varanasi presents a unique combination of physical, metaphysical and supernatural elements. |

|
| Bodhgaya is the place where
the quest of Prince Siddharth
was fulfilled after years
of seeking the truth. This
is the place where the saga
of Buddha began. It is here
that he attained supreme enlightenment
and became 'The Buddha' -
the Enlightened One. Thus
Buddhism was born here under
the Peepal Tree. The Prince
had been wandering in search
of supreme peace for six long
years. But it was at Bodhgaya
only where his holy mission
was achieved. Bodhgaya has
naturally developed into the
most sacred spot for Buddhists
from all over the world, especially
the affluent South East Asia.
Lying in sylvan solitude,
this sacred place is situated
in the bank of river Niranjana
(Modern Falgu). It is 13 km.
from Gaya town. Apart from
a Buddhist pilgrimage destination,
Gaya is also an important
Centre of Hindu Pilgrimage
where people go to pray for
the salvation of their ancestors. |

| The Buddha
lived in the sixth century
BC. Mahavir was born in 567
BC and the traveller in Bihar
will have spiritual encounters
concerning both constantly.
Rajgir is south of Nalanda
and sacred to the memory of
the founder of both Buddhism
and Jainism. Lord Buddha spent
many months of retreat during
the rainy season here, and
used to meditate and preach
on Griddhkuta, the 'Hill of
the Vultures'. Lord Mahavir
spent fourteen years of his
life at Rajgir and Nalanda.
It was in Rajgriha that Lord
Buddha delivered some of his
famous sermons and converted
King Bimbisara of the Magasha
Kingdom and countless others
to his creed. Once a great
city, Rajgir is just a village
today, but vestiges of a legendary
and historical past remain,
like the cyclopean wall that
encircles the town and the
marks engraved in rock that
local folklore ascribes to
Lord Krishna's chariot. This
legend, like many others associates
Rajgir to that distant time,
when the stirring events recorded
in the epic Mahabharata were
being enacted. |

| Kushinagar, one of the principal
centres of Buddhist pilgrimage,
is the place where Lord Buddha
left his corporeal self and
attained Mahaparinirvana.
The credit for bringing this
ancient site to light goes
to General A. Cunningham and
A.C.I. Carlyl, who, after
excavating the site in 1861,
established its antiquity
for the first time. Later,
between 1904 and 1912, several
excavations conducted by the
Archaeological Survey of India
at Kushinagar, confirmed its
identity. |

| Lumbini is the birthplace
of Lord Buddha, located in
Kapilvastu district of Nepal.
Just before His birth, Bodhisattva
was the Lord of Tushita Deva
realm. There He had resolved
to be reborn for the last
time and show the attainment
of enlightenment to the world.
He had made five investigations
and determined that this southern
continent, where men lived
for one hundred years, was
the most suitable place. Since
the royal caste was the most
respected at that point of
time and the lineages of King
Suddhodana and his Queen Mayadevi
were pure, He chose to be
born as their son, a prince
of the Shakya dynasty. |

Agra
is famous as being home to
one of the Seven Wonders of
the World - the Taj Mahal.
The architectural splendour
of the mausoleums, the fort
and the palaces is a vivid
reminder of the capital in
the 16th and early 17th centuries.
Built by Emperor Shah Jahan
for his beloved wife, Mumtaz
Mahal, it is a marvel in marble
which took Persian craftsmen
20 years to build as an edifice
of undying love of an Emperor
for his Empress. While its
significance as a political
centre ended with the transfer
of the capital to Delhi in
1634 by Shah Jahan, its architectural
wealth has secured its place
on the international map. |

local tribesmen used to organise
field sports while not engaged
in agricultural pursuit and
hence the name. This hamlet
