India
is a unique country in the world where there has never been any anti Semitic
sentiments expressed by the local communities. Jews continue to live and
prosper in India, though with a population of only 6,000. India has a legacy of four distinct Jewish groups: (a) the Bene Israel, (b) the Cochin Jews, (c) the Sephardic Jews from Europe and (d) the "Baghdadis" from Iraq. Beginning from Mumbai, we shall take you to all major centers of Judaism in India, visit Synagogues and meet Jewish leaders. We will observe their unique customs and traditions and see historic sites important to Judaism.
Day 1 : Mumbai
Arrive in Mumbai late night / early morning. Transfer to the hotel for overnight stay.
Day 2 : Mumbai
After breakfast, depart for the city tour visiting Gateway of India, Chowpatty Beach, Hanging Gardens and visit the TIFERETH SYNAGOGUE and MAGEN DAVID SYNAGOGUE. Afternoon walking tour to KENNETHY SYNAGOGUE where Kosher meal will be arrange at the residence of the priest of KENNETHY SYNAGOGUE (Subject of availability). Overnight in the hotel.
Day 3 : Mumbai
After
breakfast depart for an excursion to the south of Mumbai to the Rocky
Outcrop, where the legend of BNEI YISRAEL started. The story is that 7 men
and 7 women survived a ship wreck in the time of King Solomon. They became "oil
pressers" and remained in the area. There are a few "shuls"
there and to date, some Jews are still doing oil pressing even today. This
area is considered the holiest shrine for the Bene Israelies of Mumbai.
Packed lunch will be provided. Overnight in the hotel.Day 4 : Pune
In the morning, transfer to Railway station for the train to Pune ( 2 hours journey). Transfer to hotel. Afternoon city tour visting Agha Khan Palace, Gandhi National Memorial, Osho Commune International, Museum of Arthropoda and SUCCATH SHELMO SYNAGOGUE established in 1921. Overnight in the hotel.
Day 5 : Pune
In the morning, visit OHEL DAVID SYNAGOGUE, established in 1867 and built by the Sasoon family. Late in the afternoon, transfer to Railway Station for train back to Mumbai. Transfer to hotel for overnight stay.
Day 6 : Cochin
After breakfast, transfer to the Airport for your flight to Cochin. On arrival transfer to Hotel. In the afternoon , walk in the "Heritage Area" of Cochin where the original architecture of the city has been preserved. Visit St. Francis Church and the Chinese Fishing Nets. In the evening witness a Kathakali Dance Performance.
Overnight at the hotel.
Day 7 : Cochin
After
breakfast, visit the Jewish Community and the beautiful PARDESI SYNAGOGUE.
This Synagogue was built by Samuel Castiel, David Belila, Ebrahim Sala and
stands on the grounds of the Maharaja of Cochin. It is the first Synagogue
in India and one of the oldest in the world. Also visit Kodungalloor and
Mattancherry Palace. Afternoon sunset cruise on the backwaters of Kerala.
Overnight in the hotel.Day 8 : Mumbai / Delhi
In the morning transfer to the airport for your flight to Mumbai / Delhi. Day free for shopping, visiting Museums etc. Evening transfer to the airport for your flight to International Destination.
Optional Extension : We can arrange a visit to the JUDAH HYAM SYNAGOGUE in Delhi which was established in 1956 and combine it with a GOLDEN TRIANGLE TOUR of Agra and Jaipur.
